THE GREAT ESCAPE - ERIK NOHLIN AND SILVA’S CYCLE LAMPS ON A NORTH AMERICAN ADVENTURE

The Great Escape is the name of Erik Nohlin’s new project and the actualisation of an idea for a big adventure. After dreams and setbacks he is now setting off to head across North America on a bicycle, the only plan being that there is no plan. With him on this journey are his wife, Sofia Nohlin, and Silva’s new cycle lamps.

The Great Escape starts in Austin, Texas, on 13 March 2012. Then the Nohlins don’t know much other than that they will follow the spring westward or northward… and that the plan is not to plan. Erik says that they will “eat when we’re hungry and sleep when we’re tired”, but that having good equipment is essential even for those with no plans.

“Silva is coming with us on this journey, as an extra sun when twilight comes, as security on my long-distance races, and to help us in the great outdoors. We have packed Silva’s Singletrack and Simi lamps for cycling and Ninox for camping. The Singletrack lamp is incredible, it lights up the road like a car,” says Erik and laughs.

For Erik and Sofia, their journey is not about cycling furthest or fastest or collecting official sights. For them it’s all about cycling as slowly, quickly, or as far, as they want to every day, so that they have time to experience that little extra that most others seem to miss.

“The Great Escape is all about focusing on something new, breaking habits and searching after what’s really important in life,” says Erik.
Erik is a long-distance cyclist who cycles up to 10,000 km each year and who, in the autumn of 2011, completed the 1230 km Paris – Brest – Paris event. He will be cycling long-distance races in 2012 as well.

Sofia has never cycled further than 60 km and her only weapons are her determination and her curiosity. Neither of them have cycled with heavy panniers or lived in the outdoors for long periods of time.
“It will be a challenge for both of us. It was actually my idea, believe it or not,” says Sofia.
